Meaning– return to a previous condition, habit, subject, etc.
Usage- There is an old Jewish joke about the recurrence of the biblical flood.
2. Catastrophic
Meaning–extremely harmful; bringing physical or financial ruin
Usage- He knew he wasn’t performing well in his new role, but to hear Fate tell him he was on a crash course with catastrophe made him sick to his stomach.
3. Pecuniary
Meaning- relating or involving money
Usage- He received thanks but no pecuniary compensation for his services.
4. Auxiliary
Meaning-someone who acts as assistant.
Usage- It is largely used in patent medicines, usually as an auxiliary to aloes.
5. Monopolistic
Meaning-having exclusive control over a commercial activity by possession or legal grant
Usage- Sam had a monopolistic control over all the oil refineries in his father’s estate.
6. Contention
Meaning- a struggle, dispute or something that someone argues about.
Usage- Sometimes her old fashioned moral standards were a point of contention, but her integrity was never under question.
7. Deflationary
Meaning- a reduction in the general level of prices as a result of a severe decline in economic activity
Usage- Economists worry that a deflationary factor might cause serious financial instability in the country.
8. Brouhaha
Meaning – a noisy and overexcited reaction or response to something
Usage – For me, the brouhaha over those infamous commercials is absolutely pointless.
9. Peripheral
Meaning – situated on the edge of something
Usage – the peripheral areas of Europe have wide fields.
10. Sermonise
Meaning – to deliver an opinionated and dogmatic talk to someone
Usage – They confidently sermonize on the fixed nature of identity.
