Vocabulary words- 27 March 2016

1. Amicable – adjective – showing a polite and friendly desire to avoid disagreement and argument – मैत्रीपूर्ण

Synonyms – agreeable, courteous

Antonyms – unfriendly, aggressive

E.g. – Most customer service agents are amicable people who are good at settling disagreements.

2. Rapt – adjective – completely fascinated or absorbed by what one is seeing or hearing – भावविभोर

Synonyms –engrossed, absorbed

Antonyms – inattentive, disinterested

E.g. – The comedian kept his audience rapt with his outrageous antics.

3. Indecorous – adjective – not proper – अशोभनीय

Synonyms – improper, indecent

Antonyms – decorous, appropriate

E.g. – We cannot follow them and listen to their conversation—that would be indecorous.

4. Stalemate – noun – a situation in which movement is not possible by either side – स्थिति में अवरोध

Synonyms – deadlock, impasse

Antonyms – progress, call

E.g. – If the stalemate is not broken, the two leaders will leave the meeting without signing a treaty.

5. Tenuous – adjective – weak and likely to change – कमज़ोर

7. Belabor – verb – to emphasize an idea or suggestion too much in a way that becomes boring or annoying 

Synonyms – overelaborate, overplay

E.g. – When an issue is as important as preventing domestic abuse, it’s impossible to belabor any relevant point.

8. Cartel – noun – group of businesses or nations that collude to fix prices – उत्पादक संघ

E.g. – The cartel abused its power by overregulating price.

9. Evade – verb – to escape or avoid something – टाल जाना

Synonyms – avoid, dodge

Antonyms – accept, confront

E.g. – People tend to evade direct eye contact when they are lying.

10. Militate – verb – to influence or have an effect upon – के विरूद्ध प्रभावी होना

Synonyms – oppose, counter

E.g. – In business, the demand will usually militate the product’s price.
